The Parque de la Liberación was inaugurated in 1978, with an area of 27 hectares, becoming one of the largest parks in the urban area of Guadalajara. Its main function arose from the need to create a Stormwater Detention Basin, but with the addition of recreational and sports activities and afforestation, it became an important public recreational space in the area.
In 2017, the need arose to expand the capacity of the detention basin due to the imminent risk of flooding caused by the continuous urbanization of the surrounding areas. In this way, the detention basin was reconsidered as a permanent recreational, landscape, and environmental lake. Pruning and sanitation interventions were carried out on the dense existing forest, and areas were located for children’s playgrounds and family areas, picnic areas, pergolas, kiosks, and bathrooms.
By creating various recreational and sports activities and afforestation, it becomes an important recreational public space in the area.
As the main intervention, the large civic esplanade was redesigned, converting it into a tree-lined promenade or boulevard, with access squares, seating areas, urban furniture, a large interactive fountain, and a pier and lookout over the lake that restructures the entire main axis of the park, giving it order, clarity, and beauty to the pedestrian structure.
