San Pedro Garza Garcia’s municipality, along with the community, carried out a social study where they established lines of action to create recreational, ecological and hydraulic public spaces, developing, as a consequence, a new world class park in Monterrey’s metropolitan zone.
El Capitán Park has become an important center of community coexistence; place of exercise, recreation and rest for all ages.
The Park continues the cause of El Capitan stream, forming a lush and stabilized linear tree cover of 1.5 km. Special attention was paid to redesigning and “renaturing” the pre-existing concrete channel, transforming it into a stream with trees and aquatic plants, reconfigured with a gabion system that allows for greater hydraulic flow and flood protection.
A basketball court and multi-use areas for informal sports have been located on green areas that are illuminated until late night hours. A pump track, as well as, giant artificial rocks were implemented to introduce young people and children to rappelling and climbing.
The layout of jogging and cycling tracks now connects to a wide existing system on the main avenues of the municipality. Other features include the design of playgrounds, special places based on small plazas for picnics, as well as two modules of public bathrooms, kiosks, and lookout terraces.
A black water treatment plant (BTAR) was designed with a Plant, Lake, and Irrigation System for the park.
