Chapultepec Forest is now the main public space in the megalopolis. It is the most important and oldest public space in Mexico. Chapultepec is an iconic and powerful image for Mexicans, as it has been the centre of Mexico’s major historical events and a centre of Mexican culture.
It is divided into three sections: the first section is the historical area; the second section is dedicated to recreation (lakes, amusement rides); culture (museums); and sports (sports fields, running tracks), as well as restaurants; and the third section is an ecological and natural area, with deep ravines.
GDU participated with the Pro-Bosque de Chapultepec Trust, the Citizen Rector Council, and the Chapultepec Forest authorities in the creation of various master plans and specific projects, in a continuous multidisciplinary and participatory dialogue throughout these years.
With the aim of attracting visitors to underutilized areas, gardens, landscapes, and new projects such as the Water Mirror that connects the National Museum of Anthropology and the Tamayo Museum were designed and redesigned. A new Botanical Garden was implemented to recover Chapultepec’s botanical vocation.

Chapultepec Forest Rehabilitation 1st section
GDU was in charge of the Integral Rehabilitation of the First Section, integrating more than 26 environmental, architectural, and landscape projects. The main projects were the Water Mirror that connects the National Museum of Anthropology and the Tamayo Museum; the new Chapultepec Botanical Garden, the Integral Recovery of the Lakes (dredging, clean waters, docks, etc.); Phytosanitary Rehabilitation of Trees; Restoration of the Nezahualcoyotl Promenade; Reordering of Informal Commerce and Restoration of the Quijote Fountain, among others.
Chapultepec Forest Rehabilitation 2nd section
This section houses an amusement park, restaurants, lakes, and museums, where high-value infrastructure works for the city are located. As a starting point, the first axis to be developed was mobility, redesigning the interior roadways including jogging paths, bike lanes, public and private transportation, and a pedestrian walkway on the main circuit, as well as planting jacarandas and water absorption areas, thus changing the urban image, making it more dignified, friendly, and clear for visitors.
The monumental fountains along the circuit were rehabilitated and restored, highlighting the main transversal axis (Paseo de los Compositores and Xochipilli Fountain) with new interactive fountains.
The system of informal vendors was reorganized through kiosks, and the parking system was restructured, eradicating cars on the roadways. Among other substantial projects, a new skatepark was designed, as well as a children’s play area.
A special project was the Lomas Park along the Dolores Cemetery, where football 7 fields, a service kiosk, and children’s games were designed.
Chapultepec Forest Rehabilitation 3rd section
In the Third Section, an Integral Master Plan was developed, with emphasis on the recovery of the vegetation ecosystem, as well as the capture and recovery of rainwater. Additionally, there was a focus on pedestrian and cycling connectivity of the different canyons, springs, and hills of the complex physiographic system of this section.
